Our platform shows near-real-time locations whenever a tag connects with the Argos satellite network. These opportunistic updates occur when a red drum comes close to the surface at the same time a satellite passes overhead. The updates give a good idea of where the fish is moving, but they're best seen as estimates rather than exact points.
The most complete and reliable information comes after a tag detaches from the fish on its pop-off date, floats to the surface, and sends its full dataset to the satellites. Once that happens, our team reviews the detailed records and updates the platform with a more accurate track of the fish's journey.
